Meridia [Reductil] Sibutramine Side Effects
Side effects that can commonly occur with Meridia are:-
- Insomnia
- Constipation, or conversely Diarrhea
- Headache
- Flushing
- Loss of appetite, or conversely Increased appetite
- Increased menstrual cramps/pain
- Joint/muscular pain
- Dry mouth
An allergic reaction would require immediate medical attention and usually results in:-
- Rashes
- Hives
- Itching
- Swelling in the face-mouth-lips-tongue.
Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor at once, in case you experience any serious, persisting, or unusual side effect, which may include:-
- Increase in blood pressure
- Arrhythmias [changes in heartbeat, either in time or force]
- Angina
- Jaundice
- Swelling of feet-ankles-legs
- Mental/mood changes [Depression, Anxiety, Excitement, Disorientation, Restlessness, Suicidal ideation]
- Tremors
- Ataxia [inability to coordinate voluntary muscular movements]
- Fainting
- Abnormal bruising or bleeding
- Problems in vision
- Dilation of pupils
- Increase or decrease in the Thyroid hormones
- Respiratory disorders
- Alopecia
- Impotency
- Increased urine, or conversely Urinary retention
- Ulcers in the mouth, or stomach.
A rare condition called Serotonin Syndrome has been reported with SNRIs or SSRIs alone, but particularly if these [like Meridia] are given along with MAOIs, Anti-psychotic medication, medication to treat Migraines, Dopamine antagonists, or if used with another Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. Many side effects can occur in this condition, amongst them being:- Hallucinations, Coma, Tachycardia, Ataxia, Muscular rigidity, Mental/mood changes, Hyperthermia [elevation of body temperature as in heat stroke], Fluctuating blood pressure, and/or gastrointestinal symptoms of Nausea, Vomiting, or Diarrhea. At its worst, the Serotonin Syndrome can include symptoms of Hyperthermia, Muscular rigidity, Mental/mood changes, Autonomic instability, perhaps with a rapid fluctuation of vital signs – blood pressure and heart-rate.
