Meridia Drug Interactions
Before taking Meridia [Sibutramine] let your physician know about all the medications [prescription, and OTC], nutritional supplements and herbal products you are taking, for some of these may contain medicines that can be harmful if combined with Sibutramine. Also let the doctor know about any known allergies, for there are many cough-and-cold medicines, as well as those for allergy, which are sold over-the-counter and may contain ingredients that don’t work well with Meridia. Alcohol, tea, coffee, or caffeinated beverages may aggravate your condition if taken with Meridia.
There are certain ailments and conditions also in which Sibutramine should not be taken. You must inform your treating doctor if you have any heart problem, hypertension, depression, epilepsy, migraine, thyroid disorder, severe liver or kidney disease, gallstones, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, enlarged prostate, pheochromocytoma [adrenal gland tumors], anorexia nervosa [eating disorder], dyslipidemia [when “bad” cholesterol scores over “good” cholesterol], or closed angle glaucoma.
Amongst the medicines with which Sibutramine interacts, the following are included:-
- Other weight-loss medicines like Phentermine.
- SSRI anti-depressants like Citalopram [Celexa], Escitalopram [Lexapro], Fluoxetine [Prozac], Fluvoxamine [Luvox], Paroxetine [Paxil], or Sertraline [Zoloft].
- MAOI class of antidepressants like Nardil, or Parnate.
- MAO-B Inhibitors like Selegiline [used for Parkinson’s disease].
- Narcotic pain medications such as Meperidine, or Pentazocine.
- Cough suppressant Dextromethorphan, found in many cough medicines.
- Medicines for Migraine such as Ergolines, or Triptans.
- Lithium.
- Amino acid Tryptophan.
- Anti-fungal medicines like Ketoconazole.
- Antibiotics like Erythromycin.
